It is hard to convey just how important David Bowie’s back catalog is to me. David Bowie, Man Of Music/Man Of Words or Space Oddity (whatever you want to call it) was one of the first albums that I became obsessed with. Of course it wasn’t until Hunky Dory (one of my favorite albums of all time) when I realized that this guy was out of this world.
His song writing, above everything else, is what kills me every time. From the apocalyptic Five Years to the synth driven Warszawa everything he seems to churn out blows his contemporaries out of the water…and when I say churn out I mean that literally – look at the dates of his releases;
* David Bowie (1967)
* Space Oddity (1969)
* The Man Who Sold the World (1970)
* Hunky Dory (1971)
* The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972)
* Aladdin Sane (1973)
* Pin Ups (1973)
* Diamond Dogs (1974)
* Young Americans (1975)
* Station to Station (1976)
* Low (1977)
* "Heroes" (1977)
* Lodger (1979)
* Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) (1980)
* Let's Dance (1983)
* Tonight (1984)
* Never Let Me Down (1987)
* Black Tie White Noise (1993)
* The Buddha of Suburbia (1993)
* 1. Outside (1995)
* Earthling (1997)
* 'Hours...' (1999)
* Heathen (2002)
* Reality (2003)
I know of no other artist (or band) who has written so many influential albums in such a short time. Happy Birthday Mr Bowie…here is to another 63 years!
p.s Interestingly Bowie shares his birthday with some guy called Elvis Presley. Check out this fun article showing similarities in their careers.
